Yes, what's tragic is not only reading it to the end but understanding it and, worse, reaching for paper and a pencil to check your differentiation!! Oh god, I'm so tragic!
And no, I didn't actually check it, I decided that I needed to take desperate action and restrain myself...
Ok I apologise in advance. I couldn't resist. I need help.
Unfortunately it appears I too have forgotten how to do maths, which is rather disastrous. However with the help of online Mathematica, I found the differential was dt/dx = 1.5 - (7.5 10^6) ln2 / 2^x because you have 1 / 2^x = 2^(-x) = e (ln 2^(-x)) = e (-x ln2) If you differentiate this you get d/dx e (-x ln2) = (-ln2) e (-x ln2) = (-ln2) / 2^x Someone help me, my life is so tragic! The optimal number of iterations is 21, so it seems it doesnâÂ
I assume Izz is referring to this: http://integrals.wolfram.com/index.jsp which is wellace. Although annoying when it comes up with different answers to you.
And yes, I read to the end. And yes, I am a geek. And yes, I admit it.
Sorry Laura - to be honest it was quite a flying visit, and most of my time was spent fixing my dad's church PCs which took forever. I must have spent about 16 hours fixing them.
Anyway. I'll give you a shout next time I'm up that way. PS - Will get back to you regarding your text about visiting.
I'll take your word for it on the derivative! Where is this online Mathematica? Sounds useful... Assuming I come up with more horrendous differentials, that is!
PS - Izz - I have edited your comments to make things a bit more concise!
oi geek.
why didn't you tell me you were heading back. would have been good to meet up. next time you go to th e homeland let me know and i willcome across to meet you. did you get my text about coming to stay? ali if you fancy a break at any time it would be great to have you and that geek husband ofyours to york, we have many double bed spaces. love to you both
Cheers for making that more concise Pete!
The integrator is good, I can't remember what site I used but it was something that came up on Google. I've got the full version of Mathematica on my laptop and it's fantastic, although I'm glad I didn't pay for it!
That made me chuckle a lot! Yes i read to the end, and yes i understood it! Mind you, it's probably a good thing that i understand it given my chosen choice of career and hopeful future employers (got an interview with one of the largest semiconductor companies in the world on wednesday so fingers crossed)... I didn't check the differentiation though... shame on me
in recognition of your geekness pete, i reckon you should go to http://www.thinkgeek.com and purchase one of their t-shirts... true genius
Well i got to the bit about computer chips doubling.... i'll leave now
Ooh congrats Steph! Good luck for the interview! I saw Abby on Sunday, we agreed that we all need to meet up some time soon...
ok mr geek sir. I have a question. if I buy an external hard drive, can i connect it directly through my Linksys WAG54G v2? its a good wireless modem, i need more space cos my laptop is full (Sony Vaio PCG-K215B). i'll probs just use it for music if thats poss?
cheers mate.
You can't hook a hard drive straight up to a modem/router. You could use something like this, which you put a couple of drives in and it'll hook up to your network wirelessly.
hey izz - spoke to abby the next day and she was busy persuading me to come down for a visit! hopefully once i've got past job stress i'll have a bit more time. interview went very well - got offered 2 jobs (somehow...) - the one i went to be interviewed for, and they also offered me another one which actually sounds better. the problem is now that i'm in the middle of interviews with another company and appear to be incapable of making any kind of decision...
sorry about the minor hijacking of your blog pete...
ok, fuck that idea off then. have u seen the cost?! lol. which type of external hard drive should i go for? which brand is best? someone recommended a Lacie one to me, i reckon it would be better to get one with both USB and firewire connections, i have both on this laptop, but do i need that? i reckon i want one thats around 100GB. dont think i need bigger than that? probs just use it for music and pictures and all my uni stuff that i want to keep but dont really need anymore... needs to be fairly portable too but not mega portable. any thoughts?
Lacie, Freecom, Iomega... They're all much of a muchness. It's often cheaper to just buy the enclosure, and then buy a separate drive BTW. I doubt you'll need more than 100GB, but I guess that depends on how much stuff you've got. These days USB 2 is faster than Firewire, and USB is more prevalent, so I wouldn't be in a rush to go for firewire if it's going to cost a bit extra.
I have a Maxtor OneTouch external drive which has served me well for the last couple of years. Came with free backup software too so I can do automatic backups of the data on my computer... It also came with both Firewire and USB cables.
nice one chaps. a maxtor one is on its way to me now courtesy of the wonder that is ebay. genius. i went with 80GB. groovy.
