all very well said, my good man. we profiled j k rowling's editor in the bookseller this past week. editor? she should have been sacked on the spot! apparently it was all done in such secrecy that she had to lock herself in a room to edit, then lock it up again on her way out. sounds like a great way to work... NOT. i despair. harry-potter-on-tube count this week: at least 25. That's 25 fully grown ADULTS.
You'll allow me to take slight umbrage at your last statement, as I was one of a large contingent reading it on the train the other week! However, you do lead me to a greater concern... I wouldn't mind any number of people reading the books, what bothers me is that for a lot of people that will probably be the most challenging thing they read all year, or perhaps the only thing all year. It's all well and good taking a break from some better books to read something a bit trashy, but the chances are that its all these people are reading.
The pinnacle of British literature, and it's a badly written children's book...
Couldn't agree more. Been saying the same thing to my colleagues. People that I've seen reading HP have since been reading nothing else, unless you count flicking through London Lite as "reading". I don't mind people reading HP, but I wish they'd read some stuff for adults too.
