Shockingly, I agree with you. There's nothing else for it - you're going to have to take some gambles and dig below what the radio plays. I never listen to the radio for precisely the reasons you've mentioned above. I still love pop, but music is supposed to be art, it's supposed to be refreshing and exciting and have something to say. Nothing on the radio does that for me. Here's a suggestion mate: try finding a few music review websites that you trust, then go and try the band out on myspace. Metacritic's a good one, which you may have heard of. If you'd like me to make you a compilation of random things, I'd be glad to, too!
Funny you should mention metacritic - it's my benchmark when buying video games. Never tried it for CDs. I'll give it a shot.
A mix CD of suggestions wouldn't go amiss - would be much appreciated mate! Had another look at amazon's recommendations. It came up with Jeff Buckley. You like him, right?
I sure do! Grace is my favourite album. You can usually buy that pretty cheap. DO IT.
I agree also, especially the amazon recommendations. Do my head in. I reckon that there is a problem liking a wide range of music and not just liking genre specific music like a lot of people. There is this Pandora thing online which finds matches stuff to your musical tastes. Some nice stuff came up for bands I was putting in. Not sure if it is still on though. If I can make a couple of personal reccommendations though I would advise checking out The Cinematic Underground. It changed my life. Also you may like Dredg and Hurt....
